Fish meal grades explained, and why tuna grade is special
2026-10-21
In Thailand fish meal is graded mainly by protein: grade 1 is 60%+, grade 2 about 55–59%, grade 3 below 55%.
Protein is not everything
The value most people overlook is freshness, measured as TVBN (Total Volatile Basic Nitrogen). Lower is fresher. High-TVBN fish meal smells sharp, reduces intake and carries a histamine risk.
- TVBN < 130 mg/100 g is very fresh
- 130–200 is acceptable
- > 200 should be avoided
Why tuna grade
Fish meal from tuna canneries is made from tuna meat and trimmings cooked within hours, so it is consistently fresh, aromatic and rich in omega-3.
How to choose
- Land animals (pigs, poultry, cattle): P55 is the best value
- Aquatic animals (shrimp, fish, frogs): P60 for high, digestible protein
